Faculty of Social Work

The task of the Social Work Department is, as its name implies, to train social workers.

Social work is a helping profession. The task of a social worker is to assist individuals, families and groups in trouble, in difficult situation or to deal with extraordinary problems that are greater than their problem solving abilities. The goal of the social worker is to help their clients get back to their normal routine.

The department of Social Work at the John Wesley Theological College prepares individuals for the helping profession of social worker.

Social work is a complex activity which demands the technical knowledge of several divisions of science. So in the social work program, specific knowledge – as it applies to individuals, families and certain groups and their place within the society - is emphasized. Among the subjects are social history, sociology, psychology, theory and practice of communication, political science, law and economics.

The backbone of the training consists of special subjects such as welfare policies, or the instruments of social work. There are also entire semesters dedicated to the most important fields of social work: child care, family care, social work with the disabled, elderly care, and homelessness.

A very important part of the training is practice. Students have internships in the main types of social institutions (child care institutes, family support services, homeless care, social management, homes for the elderly).During these rotations they are not only observers but – as they progress toward the end of their studies – they participate in the actual work more and more.

To obtain a diploma the students have to write a thesis and pass the final examination.

The training is 3 and a half year long (7 semesters) and gives a BA degree.
(Both full-time and correspondence courses are available in our college, the latter training is held for one week every month.)
